Unlike most other weapons, the abyssal whip does not have an aggressive training option, so it is only possible to train strength by using the controlled option which splits the gained XP among defence, attack, strength and hitpoints. Therefore, many players find their strength level falling behind the attack and defence level. A common replacement for strength training (besides using controlled) is the Dragon scimitar (often used with a Rune defender), which has a considerably lower slash bonus. Another option is to use a Saradomin sword, which has the same stats as a whip, but is six times more expensive.
It has a Special Attack which makes the attack more accurate, and if used against another player, drains 25% of that player's energy and transfers it to you. The special attack uses 50% of the special attack energy bar.
The Abyssal whip is also known as an "Abby whip".
