Barrows Guide

1.0 Introduction

This minigame will test even the most experienced and seasoned player unless they are prepared. Below is a complete guide to the Barrows, including ten methods on how to successfully play this minigame. But for now, here is some background information on the six brothers.

Six Crypts guarded by the six brothers; Ahrim, Dharok, Guthan, Karil, Torag and Verac, thus is the Barrows. Even after death they are still bound to fight, but never underestimate your opponents, if you have the misfortune to do so you won’t come out as you came in.

It is said that a stranger gave the Barrows Brothers their armour which in turn gave them their powers. Had their minds not been on anything besides power, fame and glory they might have realised the fall they were setting themselves up for. They were the greatest warriors in all of Runescape; each day they were challenged by a new opponent and by the end of the day that opponent would be defeated.

Over time they grew weaker and weaker until one day their wounds would not heal; nothing could be done. Their companies built crypts for each of the Brothers and it is rumoured that just as the last dirt was thrown over the tombs the stranger walked to the graves of the six Brothers. In a language that had not been heard for many centuries the stranger cursed the Brothers to forever be damned to fight.

The full version, which titled "The Fall of Six" can be found at Runescape.com

Don't forget your spade now, you'll be needing it!

2.0 Requirements and Recommendations:

You can be of any level to attempt the Barrows but if you actually want to have some chance of surviving and getting one of the treasures from this minigame it is recommended that you have these skills.

2.1 Skills:

To be a "Successful Barrower":
A Successful Barrower is a player who will be able to pull off one chest in one trip with reasonable success however they do not have the levels that are required for being a "Long-Term Barrower."

Long-Term Barrower:

To make things easier:

  • 50 Construction so you are able to construct a Portal in your house
  • 40+ Agility. As there is a lot of running required a decent Agility is recommended

When Mobilising Armies was released an upgraded verision of the rings dropped by the Dagganoth Kings. Instead of the normal +4 that the rings give you, in two certain areas they give you +8. This is very useful with the Berserker ring and Seers' ring. However you must have a rank of 300 or above in Mobilising Armies which isn't easy to achieve.

2.2 Quests:

You must have completed Priest in Peril and at least started Nature Spirit in order for you to have access to the Barrows minigame.

Now, none of these quests are required for you to play Barrows however they are recommended:

Desert Treasure: For those high levelled players; teleporting and Ancient Magicks.
Ghost Ahoy: For the quick teleport via the Ectophial to Port Phasmatys.
In Search of Myreque: Allows you to use a short-cut to the Barrows.
In Aid of Myreque: Allows you to use the bank in Burgh de Rott, which is the closest bank to Barrows.
Horror from the Deep: The Prayer books gives excellent bonuses especially in Prayer and Magic.

3.0 How to get there:

Each line represents a way to get to Barrows.

Red represents the long way. It is highly recommend not even bothering with Barrows if you are using this path as it is incredibly long and you will discover you’ll get bored very quickly. Also there are a number of Ghasts who could turn your food rotten making it extremely frustrating and you can possibly lose half of your food before you even reach the Barrows.

Light Blue represents the shorter way. For those who do not enjoy questing is it recommend that you travel to Barrows this way. There is a chance that you will face Ghasts still but that does not change for any of the methods. Once you are inside the Mort Myre Swamp make your way almost to the centre, take the boat and you will end up at East Mort’ton, a short walk from the Barrows.

Green represents the shortest way. For this path you must have completed In Search of Myreque; it isn’t a difficult Quest and it will take you under an hour. This way is a must for anybody who plans to do Barrows long-term. To start off this path you duck behind the “Hair of a Dog” tavern in Canifis, go down the trapdoor. Now you use the hidden door you used during the quest (In Search of Myreque). Follow the underground path until you reach a set of large wooden doors, open them and you will pop out into the Mort Myre Swamp. Head in a southern direction and climb up the ladder. Keep heading south and use the boat like the second method. Like the second method, you will arrive at East Mort’ton.

4.0 The Brothers:

Each Brother has his own special power making the Brothers even more difficult to kill.

Ahrim the Blighted - Level 98
Ahrim uses Magic, so beware. He uses the spell "Fire Wave" so he is able to hit a max of 200. Also his Set Effect is Blighted Aura which will reduce your strength. For those who have brought your range gear now is the time to use it. As Ahrim is a Mage he is weak against Ranged attacks, use this to your full advantage. There are some who would say you should always use Prayer when fighting Ahrim. It is strongly recommended if you have only recently started Barrows that you rely on Prayer.

Dharok the Wretched - Level 115
Dharok is one of the four brothers who uses melee. He is able to hit in the high 500’s so he is a very tough opponent and is not to be underestimated. Dharok’s special is what makes him so dangerous; Wretched Strength. Due to this Set Effect Dharok has the ability to hit higher the lower his health is. It is strongly recommended that you use Protect from Melee. DO NOT TURN IT OFF UNTIL YOU ARE CERTAIN DHAROK IS DEAD!! Otherwise you may find yourself in spot of bother if he gets a hit in.

Guthan the Infested - Level 115
Some would say Guthan is more annoying, rather than difficult because of his ability to heal. His ability; Infestation, gives Guthan the chance of healing whatever he hits on his opponent. I do stress the word chance, he will not always heal so do not worry. There is always a chance if you are not using Protect from Melee that he will heal right before you kill him. This special is more annoying than a threat. It is advised not to waste Prayer on Guthan. Use it on the harder Brothers, such as Dharok or Ahrim.

Karil the Tainted - Level 98
Although he does use Range he still has a relatively high melee defence. Tainted Shot is Karil’s special. It does not do any harm to your Combat stats however; it does lower your Agility which is more frustrating than anything. For those of you who are a lower level it is recommended using Magic against him. Some of you would have brought along a DDS, use up all the specials on Karil and then finish him off with your Magic. Also it isn’t a bad idea to put on one of the Attack Prayers e.g. Incredible Reflexes, Chivalry or Piety. Do not underestimate him, his bolts do a lot of damage and he attacks very quickly.

Torag the Corrupted - Level 115
Torag would have the be of the easiest Brother as he is very weak to Magic. However he can do a decent amount of damage so keep that in mind. His special; Corruption will reduce your run energy which is nothing to be scared of. He isn’t a Brother you should really be worried about, just go in there, kill him and get out.

Verac the Defiled - Level 115
The last but by no means the least; Verac is one tough cookie. Defiler gives Verac a chance to hit through not only defence bonuses but also through protection Prayers; making him a very dangerous opponent, so be very cautious. Some may question why bother using Protect from Melee if there is a chance that he will hit through your Prayer and your defensive bonuses. Well, there is only a chance and he is very difficult even for those high levelled players. If you are unsure or you think you will have difficulties with Verac also use Prayer.

These recommendations all depend on your stats, the lower your combat stats are the more you should rely on Prayer.

5.0 The Crypts and the Tunnels:

The Brother’s Crypts

The Brothers' crypts do not change, they will always remain the same; the location of each brother is in the image to the right. Once you have dug into one of the mounds and discovered a crypt you must act quickly. Barrows is a unique and also very frustrating minigame and it will test you unless you know what you are up against.

Your Prayer gets drained the longer you stay in the Crypt or the Tunnels. The idea of going into the Crypts is rather simple; break in, kill the Brother and get out. Just before your Prayer get drained you will see faces of the fallen Brothers appear and move around your screen. This occurs both in the Crypts and the Tunnels.

When you click on a sarcophagus you will find that one of the Brothers is not in his coffin; he will be in the Tunnels below the crypts. The Brother which is down in the Tunnels is completely random each time, it may be Dharok one trip, Verac the next etc. You may wish to finish the other Brothers off before heading down into the Tunnels.

The Tunnels are the most difficult part of this minigame as it is tricky to navigate through at times. When you enter the Tunnels you will be put into one of the ladder rooms; the minimap goes completely black so you cannot use that to help you. You are to make your way to the centre of the room and open the chest which will give you your reward. There is only one right path to the chest room and it may take a while to get there you just need to remain patience and do not stress out. Also you must remain weary at all times as the Tunnel Brother may pop out at anytime.

Whenever you open a door there is a chance that your Tunnel Brother will appear so be ready to fight at anytime. If you reach the chest room and the Brother has not appeared yet ready yourself as he will appear as soon as you open the chest; thus giving you time to prepare. If your Tunnel Brother is either Dharok, Karil or Ahrim it is recommended you drink a dose or two of a Prayer potion, also if it is Ahrim, equip your ranger gear fast!

As you can see by the map below, the Tunnels contain a variety of monsters including bloodworms, crypt rats, skeletons and crypt spiders. These monsters will do some damage depending on your Defence level.

5.1 Tunnel Puzzles:

When you attempt to open the doors leading to the chest room a puzzle will pop up. You must answer the puzzle correctly. If you do not the doors reset themselves and the only door leading to the chest room changes and you will have to waste more time in finding it.

The answers circled in red below;

5.2 Kill Count:

At the bottom right of your screen as soon as you enter a crypt you will notice the words “Kill Count: #”. This will keep track of how many monsters you have killed, Barrows Brothers and Crypt monsters included.

One of the most important things about the Kill Count that some many people forget is this. THE KILL COUNT DOES NOT AFFECT YOUR CHANCE OF GETTING A BARROWS ITEM. Do not waste your time getting a massive kill count. Getting over 25 is just a waste of time. It is recommended that you get a Kill Count of 11 or over. The rest is up to you; some like to get odd numbers, some even. The Kill Count just affects whether or not you will get coins, runes and bolt racks.

6.0 Methods:

All the methods, suggested equipment and inventories shall be listed here.

The equipment that is underlined cannot be changed as it is required for that method. The equipment first suggested is considered the best. However you may change whatever you wish. Also under some of methods it may talk about some of the items in detail, it is advised you have a read through that.

These methods are only recommendation. You may change them to suit your style, budget etc.

You may kill the Brothers in any order that you so choose, this guide is only a recommendation.

Each and every method would be unsuccessful if you forget one thing….a SPADE!!!! YOU NEED A SPADE, WITHOUT IT YOU CANNOT EVEN START TO BARROW. In order to break into the crypts you need a spade and nobody will lend you one as they need it themselves.

Guthan's is rated higher than some other equipment as there is chance you may heal if you are wielding all four pieces of Guthan's armour. Normally the methods involving Guthan's allows you to tank, stay longer at Barrows and collect more rewards.

The amount of Bolts/Arrows/Runes you should bring are in the equipment pictures.

Food and Potions are discussed in FAQ’s.

6.1 Fire Bolt/Fire Blast Method:

This method is for those players who just want to have some fun however do not have very high skills. This method isn’t designed for long term Barrowing, maybe three trips at max. The more trips you plan on doing the more Prayer potions you will be needing.

Dharok – Always fight Dharok first and always use Protect from Melee.
Karil – If you plan on using your DDS on Karil then make sure you have switched Auto-Cast off in your spell-book. If you believe you are able to kill him with just melee then do so. If you did use a DDS and cannot finish him off with your DDS then use Magic. Use Prayer.
Ahrim – If you did not use a DDS to kill Karil then make sure that you have switched Auto-Cast off in your spell-book. Before entering his crypt equip your crossbow and Range gear. It is advisable to use Prayer .
Verac – Make sure your Prayer is replenished and you have switched back to your Magic armour.
Guthan and Torag – Top up your Prayer then fight them These brothers are fairly easy compared to the rest however they can deal you quite the blow.

Extra Information:
If you are using Fire bolt it is strongly suggested that you bring Chaos gauntlets from the quest Family Crest as they increase the max hit of the spell to 150 from 120.

6.2 Slayer Dart Method:

Slayer Dart is one of the most commonly used spells when it comes to Barrows. It is rather cheap and with the only requirements being 55 Slayer and 50 Magic the average player can easily use this spell. Wearing Verac's armour is suggested due to its high Prayer bonus. However Torag's armour is still very useful as it has very high defensive bonuses.

Required Skills:
55 Slayer

Recommended Skills:
75+ Attack, Strength and Defence
70+ Range
70+ Magic
55+ Prayer

Ahrim – If you did not use a DDS to kill Karil then make sure that you have switched Auto-Cast off in your spell-book. Before entering his crypt equip your crossbow and Range gear. It is advisable to use Prayer .
Verac –Switch back to your Magic armour, you do not need to use Prayer.
Guthan and Torag –Simply fight them, they are somewhat easy.

Extra Information:
The most important aspect of this set-up is the shield slot. Now if you have 80+ Defence then you should use God book or the Mage book. However, if you are under you should take the Dragon sq shield as you’ll need it for the defensive bonuses.

Now when it comes to choosing from the Mage book and the God book you first have to decide which God book you want to take. The best God book for Barrows is the Unholy book, with it’s 8+ Magic Attack bonus and +5 Prayer bonus. The Mage book has 15+ Magic Attack bonus however no Prayer bonus. It is completely up to you which one you choose.

6.3 Cheap Slayer Dart Method (Under 2 mill):

Slayer Dart is a wonderful spell and widely used in Barrows. Although the Slayer Dart Method has been covered this one is designed for players on a budget or of a lesser level.

If you are going with the Mystic robes then it is suggested that you take more Prayer pots as you will be relying on Prayer far more than the players who use Torag armour.

55 Slayer

70+ Attack, Strength and Defence

Verac – Make sure your Prayer is replenished and you have switched back to your Magic armour.
Guthan and Torag – Top up your Prayer then fight them.

6.4 Slayer Dart with Guthan Method:

This method is very similar to those which were previously mentioned however this time it involves the use of Guthan's armour. Now, you may wish to have another armour as well as Guthan's however you may find it to be very heavy and you will need to rest more than normal.

Use the Warspear on the crypt creatures when you are on low health.

Required Skills:
55 Slayer
70+ Attack and Defence

Verac –Switch back to your Magic armour, you do not need to use Prayer.
Guthan and Torag –Simply fight them, they are somewhat easy.

Extra Information:
If your health gets low at any point simply equip the warspear. However it is recommended that you only attempt to heal your health on the crypt monsters.

6.5 Claws of Guthix Method:

This method is for the more advanced players. It is STRONGLY suggested that you do have Void Knight mace because of its 6+ Prayer bonus. Also due to changes of the Auto-Casting of spells the Void Knight mace does 10% more damage. If you are using the spell Charge with the Mace, then the most damage you can deal at once is 330. Without Charge but with the Mace, it is 220. You may wish to use the Guthix staff, it is your choice.

Required Skills:
80 Magic
Unlocked Claws of Guthix from Mage Arena

Recommended Skills:
75+ Attack, Strength and Defence
70+ Range
80+ Magic
60+ Prayer

Helm: Verac’s helm > Guthan’s helm

Tactics:
Before entering the Dharok’s crypt make sure that you have casted Charge if you have 80 Magic or above. Also that you have Claws of Guthix on Auto-Cast. Dharok – Always fight Dharok first and always use Protect from Melee.
Karil – If you plan on using your DDS on Karil then make sure you have switched Auto-Cast off in your spell-book. If you didn’t bring a DDS then just use the spell on Karil. It is advisable that you use Prayer to protect yourself from Karil’s attacks.

For this method to work successfully you must first have unlocked the Claws of Guthix spell from the Mage Arena out in the Wilderness. If you have over 80 Magic and wish to use Charge which powers up God spells you must be wearing that particular cape, for this it is the Guthix cape.

To get the Void Knight mace you need to gain 250 points at Pest Control. Is it worth the trouble? Yes.

6.6 Verac Method:

This method is used widely for those players with higher Combat skills in the melee department. The major bonus with this method is the Prayer bonus that comes with it. If you do not have 85+ Attack, Strength or Defence then it is advisable to bring Potions that will boost those stats.

Required Skills:
70 Attack and Defence

Recommended Skills:
85+ Attack, Strength and Defence

Tactics:
Dharok – Always fight Dharok first and always use Protect from Melee.
Karil – Use all 4 DDS specials on him, if you aren’t able to kill him with the specials alone then equip Verac’s flail again. Use Prayer.
Ahrim – Put on Protect from Magic as Ahrim can do a fair bit of damage.
Verac – If you have a Defence level lower than what is recommended then drinking a dose from a Super defence potion is suggested. Guthan and Torag –Simply fight them, they are somewhat easy.

6.7 Verac with Godsword Method:

This method, as the name may suggest, is very similar to that of the Verac Method just with a Godsword. Now your main weapon may be Verac’s flail or the Godsword, which is up to you. You may use up Special Attack bar as you see fit. It is suggested that you use it at least once on Dharok so it may recharge over the time while you kill the other Brothers.

Required Skills:
75 Attack and Defence

Recommended Skills:
90+ Attack, Strength and Defence
70+ Range
70+ Prayer

Karil – Either use your Godsword of Flail to kill this Brother. Use Prayer.
Ahrim – Put on Protect from Magic as Ahrim can do a fair bit of damage.
Verac – If you have a Defence level lower than what is recommended then drinking a dose from a Super defence potion is suggested. Guthan and Torag –Simply fight them, they are somewhat easy.

Extra Information:
Which Godsword you should take is discussed in the method below.

6.8 Godsword Method:

This method is strongly recommended for people with 90+ and only those high levelled players. However it is entirely your choice. The Godsword is a very powerful weapon but with all weapons that are very powerful, it is rather slow. If you miss then the Brothers will be able to get in an extra hit, maybe two. Which is why this method has such high recommendations.

Required Skills:
75 Attack and Defence

Recommended Skills:
90+ Attack, Strength and Defence
70+ Range
70+ Prayer

Helm: Verac’s helm > Torag’s helm > Helm of Neitiznot
Cape: Fire cape > Achievement cape > Obsidian cape > Cape of legends
Amulet: Amulet of fury > Amulet of glory > Amulet of strength > God stole
Ammunition: Diamond (e) bolts > Board bolts

Inventory:

SPADE!!!
Teleport runes or object
Range top e.g. Armadyl chestplate, Karil leathertop or Black d’hide body
Range bottom e.g. Armadyl plateskirt > Karil leatherskirt or Black d’hide chaps
Rune crossbow
3 Prayer potions(4)
Food

Tactics:
Dharok – Always fight Dharok first and always use Protect from Melee.
Karil – It is advisable to use Prayer as Karil can produce some rather high hits.

It is recommended when using this method you have plus 90+ in all melee Combat stats otherwise you do not hit often.

The most important question for this setup is obviously which Godsword? Well it is recommended you do it in this order; Saradomin > Armadyl > Bandos > Zamorak.

Zamorak at 18kg is far too heavy to have at Barrows. Bandos is rather cheap and a decent special but one special allow uses up the whole Special Attack bar. Nor does the Bandos godsword compare with the Armadyl or Saradomin godsword. Armadyl godsword’s special, the Judgement, allows you to hit 25% more however the Saradomin godsword’s special, Healing Blade, heals you and restores some Prayer if successful. So the Saradomin godsword is the best possible choice.

When it comes to Ahrim, you can either Range him or use your Godsword.

6.9 Black Salamander Method:

Required Skills:
70 Attack, Defence, Magic and Range

Recommended Skills:
80 + Attack, Strength and Defence
80+ Range
70+ Prayer

Helm: Verac’s helm > Torag’s helm > Helm of Neitiznot
Cape: Fire cape > Achievement cape (t) > Achievement cape > God cape > Obsidian cape > Cape of legends
Amulet: Amulet of fury > Amulet of glory > God stole

Dharok – Always fight Dharok first and always use Protect from Melee. Before entering Dharok’s crypt have your Black salamander on Magic style.
Karil – Use all 4 DDS specials on him, if you aren’t able to kill him with the specials alone then equip your Black salamander again, change it so it is on Magic attack style. Use Prayer.
Ahrim – Before entering Ahrim’s crypt change your attack style to Range
Verac – If you did bring along one Super defence potion now would be the time to take a sip. Switch your attack style back to Magic and enter Verac’s crypt. You may need to eat.

Tactics:
All the Brothers – After you have entered the crypt, use an ice spell on the Brother. Run away and then use your other spell on him. Keep doing this until the Brother is dead. Repeat this method on all of the Brothers. Be very wary as your ice spell might not always work. Protect from Melee is required at all times when you are facing the melee brothers. When you are going up against Karil, put Protect from Missles on. When going head to head with Ahrim, protect from Magic. Otherwise you will find yourself in a spot of bother.

Extra Information:
The idea of this method is for you to use one of the ice spells then move away from whichever brother you are fighting then cast of one the other spells, normally one of the blood ones. The spells most commonly used are Ice Blitz and Blood Blitz.

FAQ’s:

Q: Can I take a familiar with me?

A: No, if you take one within a certain distance of the Barrows it disappears.

Q: Can I use Bones to Peaches?

A: Yes of course, there are a number of creatures in the tunnels that drop bones.

Q: Are there any safespots?

A: I define a safespot to be a place where you can stand, not get attacked by anything however you can still deal damage. No, there are no safespots.

Q: How often do you get a Barrows item drop?

A: Some say every 6 chests, others say 8. You will most likely get one within 10 - 15 chests.

Q: Should I wear Karil armour over Black d’hide? Also what about Armadyl?

A: For the player who does not have much it is recommended you just stick with good old Black d’hide. You will only be wearing it for one opponent, Ahrim, and that is it. There are some differences when it comes to the armours for example; Karil’s leathertop gives 15+ more Magic defence bonus than the Black d’hide body. However you must remember that most of your will be using your Prayer to protect you from Ahrim, so there is no real need for you to spend around 4.1mill on the leathertop. Another interesting point is there is no difference in Range attack with these two tops.

If were to look at the Armadyl chestplate you would find that this chestplate is both better in Magic defence and Range attack. So of course it would be the better choice, especially if you were choosing not to use Prayer on Ahrim. HOWEVER, the cost of the chestplate alone is HUGE at roughly 17mill it isn’t cheap. You must also factor in the chance of you losing that.

Q: What should I choose, Ring of life or Seers' ring?

A: Each ring has its own bonuses; the Ring of life protects you and will teleport you out if your health gets too low while the Seers' ring gives 4+ to Magic attack and defence. The Seers' ring gives you some decent bonuses in something you need and do not have much of while the Ring of life gives you that safe net. For those unexperienced players the Ring of life is a must! For those who are more familiar with the Barrows I’d suggest using the Seers ring.

Q: Am I able to get a spade from anywhere near Barrows?

A: Besides the banks close to Barrows, no not at all. Reason why it is so important you have a spade with you!

Q: What type of food do I bring?

A: For those who are of a lower level it is suggested you take Shark, Monkfish or Tuna potatoes, as those items of food heal quite a lot in one hit. Otherwise I would suggest using Pineapple pizza which heals 22 however you have to eat both pieces of the pizza.

Q: You haven't included anything about Potions like Super defence(4) or Super attack(4)? Should I take them along?

A: For me personally I don't take any other potions besides Prayer potion(4) so it is really your choice which potions you should take.
